Andrew Duff, Liberal Democrat Euro MP for the East of England, welcomed the election of Jose Manuel Durao Barroso as the next President of the Commission, to take office on 1 November in succession to Romano Prodi.
Andrew Duff said:
'Mr Barroso is a dynamic and forceful pro-European. He has a strong commitment to bringing the Constitution into force and in completing the single market agenda for enterprise and jobs.
'He promises to lead a strong Commission, and I believe him. I and my colleagues in the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe were happy to support him, and look forward to working with him.
'The Liberals provided Mr Barroso with the key support he needed. The Party of European Socialists, who promised to defeat Mr Barroso's appointment, are looking rather weak and internally divided. UKIP look irrelevant.'
Mr Barroso was elected by the European Parliament with 415 votes for, 251 against and 44 abstentions.
