Britain should switch more towards Europe

Andrew Duff MEP, Leader of the Liberal Democrat European Parliamentary Party, has welcomed the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome and the achievements of the European Union.
Speaking from Berlin where he attends the official celebrations, Andrew said:
"The European Union, grounded in liberal values, has brought peace, prosperity and stability to our continent. It is a fantastic historic achievement, born out of bitter conflict and barbarism. The Treaty of Rome has led to the single market, the euro, social progress, environmental protection, and tackling international crime. The EU, enlarged from 6 to 27 states, is a model for liberal democracy worldwide.
"50 years ago the UK was absent. The British thought European integration was undesirable, unnecessary or doomed to fail. Even today British European policy remains uncertain and out of touch with reality. Sadly, Tony Blair has lost his way in Europe, while most Tories want out.
"Only the Liberal Democrats remain committed to Britain playing a full part in all aspects of European integration. Working together with our EU partners, Britain can rise to the economic challenges of globalisation, combat climate change and build a secure democratic future for our country. The UK needs to shift towards Europe if its foreign and security policy is not to remain totally dependent on the United States."
