Andrew Duff MEP welcomes Nick Clegg

Welcoming the result of the Lib Dem leadership contest, Andrew Duff, Lib Dem Euro MP for the East of England and Leader of the Lib Dems in the European Parliament, said:
"Nick Clegg promises to be a brilliant leader of the party. His first big electoral contest may well be the European Parliamentary campaign in June 2009. His own record as MEP for the East Midlands will ensure that, for the first time, the whole party will fight with self-confidence on European issues. Under Clegg's leadership, the Lib Dems must connect British political opinion to the EU dimension, and vice versa.
"Both Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne should be congratulated on stimulating a serious debate within the party about its future purpose and direction. Both are friends of mine -- but it is undeniably good for the East of England that Nick is a Cambridge graduate. The prospects of the party in the region at all levels of government are excellent."
